The Barley Sheaf has stood on Old Bridge Street since 1819, beside the River Allen and decades before Truro Cathedral rose up next door. It's one of the oldest pubs in the city. Old trade directories record the landlords who came before us: Mrs Elizabeth Reed in 1897, James Evans in 1914 and S J Wyatt in 1939, back when it was the Barley Sheaf Hotel. We've been running it since May 2018, and we're proud to keep a proper traditional pub going in the heart of Truro.

 

Meet Bessie, our longest-serving regular

Some regulars never leave. At the Barley Sheaf, one of them has been here for well over a century.

 

A visiting medium told us the pub has a resident spirit called Bessie, and believe us, she makes herself known. Bottles and glasses are thrown from the shelves with no one near them. An icy chill sweeps across the bar on the warmest of nights. Customers have felt a sharp poke in the back, turned around, and found nobody there.

 

So who is Bessie? We have our suspicions. Bessie is an old name for Elizabeth, and Mrs Elizabeth Reed ran this pub in 1897. Perhaps she never quite handed over the keys.

 

Come for a pint and see if she pays you a visit. If you feel a sudden chill, it's only polite to raise a glass to her.

Enjoy them by the real log fire, in the conservatory overlooking the river, or out in one of our three heated garden booths, whatever the weather.

 

Pool, darts and a jukebox

We have two pool tables, a dartboard and a jukebox stocked with your favourites.

Monday: Killer Pool from 5pm, always a busy night

Thursday: Pool tournament. Players gather from 5pm and it starts at 6pm. It's £5 to enter and the winner takes the pot.

 

Stay the night

We have eight en-suite rooms upstairs, steps from the Cathedral, the shops and the Hall for Cornwall. Rooms are bed only, and we don't serve food.
